Hollywood Herrera Stars in ASCS Southwest Go at USA!

Lonnie Wheatley, TUCSON, Ariz. (April 3, 2010) – Johnny Herrera dropped in on the ASCS Southwest Region at USA Raceway on Saturday night with familiar results by racing to victory lane in the evening’s nightcap.

While two-time and defending series champion Rick Ziehl set the early pace, Herrera took command following a restart and charged to the checkered flag unabated for the sixth time in as many ASCS Southwest starts over the past two seasons.

The Albuquerque racer was chased to the line by Las Cruces shoe Ziehl, with El Paso’s John Carney II climbing from eighth to take the show position.

Fifteen-year-old Joshua Hodges was fourth, with Calvin Landis rounding out the top five.  John Gaston crossed the stripe sixth, while R.J. Johnson turned in the night’s top passing performance by racing from 17th to seventh after winning the “B” Main.

Cole Boyd, Bud Goodwin and Mike Rux, Jr., completed the top ten.

Landis, Herrera, Hodges and J.T. Imperial topped heat race action for Saturday night’s 29-car field.

Phoenix racer, Matt Martinez waited patiently in the third position, in fact so patient that he waited until the last lap and the last corner prior to taking the lead and capturing the 20-Lap SCRA Factory Stock feature.  Mass chaos took place throughout the field just as Martinez passed the first and second place car to take the win in spectacular fashion.  Ty Weidner, Joey McCullough, Chris Tipton and Bob Taylor rounded out the top five with a record 30-car field taking green flag action.

Ted Robinson held off a hard charging Ricky McGuire to take home top honors in the X-Modified feature.  Robinson led the way keeping the persistent McGuire in his rear view mirror.  AJ Huebner, Dusty Gauthier and Rick Akers rounded out the top five.

Andy Eatwell continued his dominance in Southwest Modlite action as he took his fourth straight victory.  Eatwell topped a stout 25-car field beating Steve Moriarty, Tony “The Tiger” Evans, Mark Julien and Landon Cling in the 20-lap feature.

Tony Pugliese continued to lead the FWD Hornet battle as he took home the hardware out dueling Zach Light and the consistent point leader Stephen Lee.

Jim Hock picked up his second win in what may have been one of the best RWD Hornet races in history.  Hock and the Jones brothers battled it out lap after lap with the red 16 prevailing at the end.
